Pro-Palestine supporters vandalized UC Regent Jonathan “Jay” Sures’ Brentwood home on Wednesday morning.

Around 70 members of the Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA gathered in front of Sures’ house on February 5th, demanding him to “speak out against the genocide in Gaza.” Protesters put red handprints on Sures’ garage door and caution tapes around his front yard. They also held up a sign that said, “DISCLOSE, DIVEST, WE WILL NOT STOP, WE WILL NOT REST.”

According to the Daily Bruin, a local neighbor said that the protest lasted for around two hours and that they were pushed trying to film the protest. Protesters chanted, “Jonathan Sures you will pay, until you see your final day.”

Prior to the incident, the student group posted multiple slides on Instagram about Sures and his attempt to “intimidate faculty and students who spoke out against the genocide in Gaza.” SJP also deemed him responsible for “protecting UC investments in genocide and weapons manufacturing.

In January 2024, Sures introduced a policy prohibiting academic departments from making political statements, which some people argued was aimed towards pro-Palestine speech.

On their Instagram story, the group threatened to release Sures’ address once they reach a certain amount of likes.

In a statement to the Daily Bruin, UC Office of the President spokesperson Stett Holbrook condemned the protest. He said, “The University strongly supports freedom of speech and the rights of our community members to participate in nonviolent protests, and we condemn all crimes and harassment committed against members of our UC community.”
